Rumours began circulating at the end of last week that former Springbok captain and current Saracens hooker, John Smit would return to South Africa to fulfill the role of Chief Executive Officer at the Sharks Rugby Union. Those rumours have been confirmed.
Smit will replace current chief executive Brian van Zyl, who will mentor Smit in the role until 28 February 2014.
Smit played for an captained the Sharks at Currie Cup and Super Rugby level at various points over his 13 years with the union, from 1998 to 2011.
Smit lifted two Tri Nations trophies, a British and Irish Lions series win and a World Cup as captain of the Springboks in a career that spanned 11 years and 111 caps.
