Internet giant, Google has confirmed that it will be extending its super fast fibre broadband services to Austin, Texas. This after Google chairman, Eric Schmidt announced in December the company was looking for new areas to expand into.
The roll out is currently limited to Kansas City, where residents will be enjoying one gigabit per second speeds for $70 (R625) per month. Google plans to have homes connected by the middle of 2014. The company called the city:
A mecca for creativity and entrepreneurialism, with thriving artistic and tech communities.
Vice president of Google Fibre, Milo Medin said:
We’re sure these folks will do amazing things with gigabit access and we feel very privileged to have been welcomed to their community.
According to web analyst, Steven Hartley:
Google has a long way to go before it becomes a nationwide ISP but clearly it feels that the Kansas experiment was a success and it is in a position to cherry-pick its locations.
The roll out in Kansas began in November of 2012.
South Africa the fastest broadband speed is in Randfontein, cruising at a sedate 11,30Mbps, while the fastest current broadband speed in the world is in Vilnius, Lithuania at 49,23Mbps.
