The Delhi gang rape of a female Bangalore worker spurred a team of engineering students to protect women against sexual crimes.Three Indian automobile engineering students at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology University in Chennai claim to have developed a sexual offences defence in India in the form of lingerie which is tracked via GPS and is capable of sending an alert to the police as well as the parents of the woman wearing them. Co-developer of the product named, Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE), Manisha Mohan said:
The lingerie with global positioning system (GPS), global system for mobile communications (GSM) and also pressure sensors, is capable of sending shock waves of 3,800 kV as well as alerts to parents and police. The shocks can be emitted up to 82 times. A person trying to molest a girl will get the shock of his life the moment pressure sensors get activated, and the GPS and GSM modules would send an SMS on emergency number 100, as well as to parents of the girl.
The three students, Manisha Mohan, Rimpi Tripathi and Neeladri Basu Pal developed the prototype of SHE and are currently working on finalising the product to be ready for the commercial market in April. Mohan said:
I have approached a friend in National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to help me find the right kind of fabric for the product so that it can be washed.
