Adam Harvey a New York City artist who specializes in “wearable technology” has developed an anti-drone clothing line, The Stealth Wear Collection. The items in the collection prevent the wearer from being detected by unmanned aircrafts.
When asked what the rationale behind the development of the line was, Harvey said:
It’s a very invasive technology. I wanted to find something to protect against it.
The items are cleary not practical for every day wear at all, but serve the purpose of acting as functional “counter-surveilance solution.” On Harvey’s website it is made clear that the collection was made to address the rise of surveillance and to gain control over our privacy.
Harvey said:
These are primarily fashion items and art items. I’m not trying to make products for survivalists. I would like to introduce this idea to people: that surveillance is not bulletproof. That there are ways to interact with it and there are ways to aestheticise it.
The Stealth Collection is not Harvey’s first atttempt at creating wearable technology. In 2010 he debuted Camoflash, an anti-paprazzi cloth that emits a counter-flash when bursts of bright light (like a camera flash) are detected. Next on his list of innovations was CV Dazzle, a camouflage technique that combines makeup and hairstyles to counter facial recognition software.
If you are a little paranoid and want to get some new gear for your wardrobe, Harvey’s items will set you back a whole lot of cash. The hoodie retails for $487,45 (R4,475), the scarf $561,99 (R5,160) and the burqa an insane $2278,35 (R20,919) – yes his collection includes a burqa and hijab, as drones particularly target Muslim countries.
