The United States Embassy in Cairo has gained notoriety for being rather active on Twitter. And yesterday was no different, with the embassy taking a swipe at Egyptian President, Mohamamed Morsi with the weapon that is Jon Stewart’s satire.
A US Embassy tweet linked to a Jon Stewart segment on the “Daily Show”, in which Stewart berated Morsi for his government’s arrest of Bassem Youssef. Youssef is a popular political TV satirist, and is sometimes he is compared to Stewart himself. Youssef was imprisoned over the weekend for a brief period due to him “insulting Islam” and “belittling” Morsi.

Stewart said:
When you are actually powerful, you don’t have to be petty. For someone who spent time in jail yourself under [former President Hosni] Mubarak, you seem awfully eager to send other people there for the same non-crimes. And just like you, they will emerge stronger and more determined.
At one point in the show, Stewart even called Morsi a “crazy guy.”
And like any good government, the Egyptian Presidency wasn’t going to let that kind of subtweeting slide. The official Twitter feed from the Egyptian president’s office responded saying: It’s inappropriate for a diplomatic mission to engage in such negative political propaganda.
Supporters for both sets of opinion have been going at it for hours now.
Solid gold.
