Need a little help? Hosting a wine tasting club isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience with the theme. Wine Tasting is becoming a little bit of thing lately, so we thought we’d equip you with the knowledge that you’ll need to pull off hosting a wine tasting club succesfully. You know, because we know. And we love you.
First, you’ve been doing this whole friendship thing with people for a while now. It’s important not to invite everyone you know. Keep the guests to a manageable minimum. We’re talking 10 people, max.
Glassware
No one can host a successful wine tasting party if they don’t have the right glassware. And no, this isn’t a step that you ignore and hope it’ll be alright. It won’t be alright, because the aroma of the wine is either improved or diminished by the shape of the glass.
In order for everyone to have equal experience, they have to have the same shape of glass. We don’t mean fine-cut crystal – although it may add to your street cred – normal non-plastic, matching, medium to large glasses that you can get your nose into for a good whiff of the grapes is what you need. Remember, you’re facilitating an experience, not just a party.
B.Y.O.B
In order to get a variety of flavours and tap into the favourites of your guests, set a price and ask them bring their wine of choice for sharing. R50 is probably a good starting price though for such an occasion it is always nice to pay a little extra, remember you aren’t paying for corkage so it’t ok if you go a little crazy ;). Setting a price is a nice way to equal out the buying process and get as much learning as you can done.
It isn’t a thing without snacks
As a host you don’t have to go overboard when it comes dishing out snacks, but you know, wine and food go together like driving and swearing. Don’t ask anyone to bring any cheese. If their cheese sucks, it’ll be awkward. Go to a store with a cheese display and ask someone vaguely intelligible which delicious cheeses you should buy for the evening. And don’t forget the biscuits. People will not appreciate a lack of things with which to eat the cheese.
Talk!
The key to any successful wine tasting, beside the wine of course, is the conversation. In order to learn about the wines you are drinking, you have to talk to one another and tell each other what you think, what you like and what you don’t like. Alternatively, you could just enjoy the wine, and play 30 seconds which is probably the most secretly fun things in the world when paired with wine.
