A New Zealand mother left her baby in the car while she went shopping at a Porirua Shopping Market this last week. The baby was left in the car seat , covered by a blanket. A note with the mother’s cellphpone details, should there be any issues, read:
My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything.
Senior Sergeant Justin Rakena from Porirua Police said no complaints had been lodged and the police were not called in, thus the police could not launch an investigation.
A photo of the baby was posted on a popular social media site, Facebook by radio personality Polly Gillespie, which sparked a huge outcry. But according to Rakena, this is standard practice for the area.
This is quite common, and quite often there’s an innocent explanation. At a guess I’d say 95 per cent of these things can be explained away.
One of the comments by Cat Marie Horner under the posted picture read:
I’m sorry this is completely irresponsible! You do not leave children under the age of 14 unsupervised at all.
Why did she have time to write a note?? Secondly, you do not put a capsule seat in the front of a car, due to dashboard airbags. Also, if you are that tired you should not be driving.
Under New Zealand law, it is illegal for a parent or guardian to leave a child under the age of 14 unaccompanied for an unreasonable time or in unreasonable conditions. Doing so could result in a fine of up to $2,000.
