We called it. Mandy Wiener and Barry Bateman will write the Oscar Pistorius book.
Well, one of the the Oscar Pistorius books, at least.
EWN reporter, Barry Bateman rose to global prominence during the bail application hearing of Pistorius by live-tweeting the events as they unfolded in the court room. His Twitter following grew exponentially over the course of three days, resulting in Bateman establishing himself as the go-to reporter on the field for international news outlets seeking a local opinion.
Wiener, who also reported from the bail application hearing, was celebrated in 2011 for transforming her reportage on the Brett Kebble murder case into a best-selling book, Killing Kebble. Wiener used the success of Killing Kebble to launch a number of divergent projects, including the “Youngsters” series, which featured books by Khaya Dlanga, Shaka Sisulu, Nic Rabinowitz, and Wiener herself. Wiener continues to head up the Youngsters project.
The book will be titled, Behind the Door: The Oscar and Reeva Story, which makes it about as globally consumable as a book title gets. Wiener and Bateman will work on the book as the trial proceeds, with publishing due shortly after the trial concludes.
Considering the massive global interest that the story has enjoyed thus far, Wiener and Bateman could be strapping in for the most lucrative book of their careers.
