The Samsung Galaxy S4 was unveiled yesterday at Radio City Hall, New York City after intense media hype. Here’s everything you need to know about Samsung’s new flagship phone, in a nutshell.
Aesthetically, the S4 looks like a larger version of the S3 which means that it’s big. Very big. Too big? That’s up to the consumer to decide.
It boasts a five inch screen, 1080p Super HD AMOLED display covered in Gorilla Glass 3.
It is made of plastic, and 0,31 inches thick – making it 0,03 of an inch thinner than the S3. It is 0,1 of an ounce lighter than the S3.
The rear camera is a facemelting 13 megapixels (5 more than the S3), while the front camera is 2 megapixels, almost unchanged from the S3.
Samsung is still rolling with S Voice on the S4, which was a crappy facsimile of iOS’s Siri. Time will tell whether this app has improved functionality on the new phone.
The camera tracking technology is the most exciting spec on the S4.
By tracking your eye movement, the S4 will pause a video when you look away from the screen with Smart Pause. Smart Scroll, on the other hand, scrolls up and down through a page when the phone is tilted. While the Smart Pause feature could lead to jittery video playback while you keep an eye on what’s going on around you, the Smart Scroll could be helpful when reading large blocks of text. Maybe.
Tech critics call this gimmicky. We call that awesome. That said, it may well turn out to be technokitsch that no one uses.
The Samsung S4 isn’t everything Samsung said it would be, but neither was the S3, and that was still one of the most popular phones of 2012.
Now, after all that excitement, enjoy this round up of pics from the S4 launch event, for your digestion.
