Local band, Red Huxley is comprised of three young musicians from Cape Town who have been working hard to make their mark in the industry. Last year, Red Huxley met Dave Catching from Eagles Of Death Metal. They were brave and cheeky enough to hand Catching their music, asking whether he would be keen to produce their debut album. He replied soon after listening to it, with, “Sweet, when are we going to do this record?”
This is not only a great opportunity, but a compliment – why you may ask? Well, Dave Catching has handed this young, talented South African band the opportunity to record their album in his studio, Rancho de le Luna, in Joshua Tree, California which has been home to many bands and artists. Bands like Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Arctic Monkeys and Dave Grohl – YES! So for someone like Catching – who has been involved in recording such greats – to agree to record your debut album, is a compliment of the highest regard.
This is an unbelievable opportunity. However, this is a massive task for an unsigned band to achieve, so they are calling on fellow South African’s to help them raise funds. I chatted to the band to get details about their Kickstarter project to raise the money to get to Rancho. Here’s what they had to say:
We all know Dave Catching is a great musician, and he has been behind the recording of great albums, but why go through all this trouble to record with him when we have talented producers a stones throw away?
Well, we have all been huge fans of Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the stone age for a long time, so for one part it’s a chance to work with someone we idolize who has played for the bands that have directly influenced us in a big way. There are a lot of local producers that are pretty awesome and more than capable of doing a great job but we just thought that this is an opportunity to do something different and step away from the norm. We could have brought him here but he strongly suggested that going to Rancho would be much better because he knows his equipment like the back of his hand.
Has this been a long lived dream, or a spur of the moment thing, seeing that Dave Catching happened to be in the country?
We have always had an idea of getting a big name to produce our album. Getting someone who has influenced us as a band would be the ultimate choice. When we heard that Eagles Of Death Metal were coming to SA we jumped at the chance and hustled our way backstage to meet them. We had the idea of asking him to produce our album but we never actually thought anything would come of it.
The amount you are asking for is substantial. Did you ever think that it was too much? Were you ever hesitant to open up bidding from your fans?
Ja, when we added the numbers up, it blew our minds a bit. We looked at many options like robbing a bank or selling our organs but we ended up on Kickstarter.com. The cool thing is it’s not just like “give us money”. The fans can pledge for the album (before its made) and T shirts and other merchandise, so it’s a cool way for the fans to get involved and support the project as well.
You are a young band who have been offered a great opportunity, but why should South Africans invest money into watching you realise your dreams?
It is a great opportunity for us to bridge the gap between South Africa and an international music scene. In doing so we are hopefully building the local music scene and getting more interest in local rock music. People are pledging for rewards so in the end they will also get a copy of the badass album we make with Dave.
If you don’t raise enough money, what happens to the money already raised from the bids?
The way Kickstarter works is that it’s all or nothing. If we don’t make the full $25 000, we don’t get a cent. It makes sense because if we only got half the money we wouldn’t be able to do it and those people [who placed a bid] would not get what they pledged for.
Are you raising money in other ways as well?
Yes, we plan to keep raising money even after the Kickstarter deadline is over. We have been speaking to some sponsors and thinking of cool ways to do it. It’s still in the works, but it will roll out soon. And of course we are playing gigs to make money the good old hard working band way.
If you do make enough money to get to Rancho, what is next in your strategy?
We plan to come back and hit the road on a launch tour, to take our music into the far corners of the country. Then we will plan to release more content like music videos, etcetera, and then more and more touring in SA and hopefully beyond.
Do you have plans to tour America while you are there recording your debut album?
We spoke to Dave about maybe playing a couple shows around the area he lives in. He named five rad venues nearby and said he would help us book a couple of shows, but that we would be focusing and working hard on the album. So not a full on “tour”, maybe just a couple cool shows.
Possibly yes, eventually, but it’s hard to tell where we are going just yet. But we are keeping our eyes on the States and possibly Europe. It is going to be great to go to California and get a small glimpse at how they run things in their music scene.
How do we support you guys?
If you visit our Road to Rancho project, you can watch a video we made and check out all the rewards you get for different levels of pledges. If you are keen to get involved click the big green “BACK THIS PROJECT” button, and they take you from there.
We ran the project for 40 days, and there are four days left to go. AH! So far we have 61 pledgers and $16 504 dollars. So at the end of this week we will know if it’s all going to happen or not. Pretty nerve wrecking stuff.
