Volvo has unveiled a cyclist detection facility that could prevent horrific accidents. The new device was introduced at a Geneva motor show. Volvo said that vehicles fitted with the device would detect “threats” like an annoying cyclist swerving in front of you out of nowhere.
If the device sensed a collision risk, an alarm would sound and the car’s brakes would deploy, stopping the car dead in its tracks. The device is not all that new though, as Volvo launched its pedestrian technology in 2010. It is simply an “enhanced version” of that device.
The new technology uses a radar in the cars grille and a camera fitted between the windscreen and rear view mirror to detect collision threats.
The code for the equipment has been rewritten to incorporate the new feature, but Volvos that have this system installed cannot simply upgrade their software. The new system would need to be installed while the cars are being assembled and is only available in seven of the 11 models of the company’s existing car line-up.
This new technology for Volvo will set you back £1 850 (R25 000) on top of the package for other features.
