Apartheid-era Vlakplaas police death commander and convicted murderer, Dirk Coetzee has died. It was reported that Coetzee had cancer but died of kidney failure.
He was the co-founder and commander of the covert South African police unit in Vlakplaas. Vlakplaas – a farm 20km west of Pretoria – was the headquarters of the apartheid police counterinsurgency unit, C10. Coetzee and his colleagues were responsible for many brutal murders, including those of Sizwe Khondile and Griffiths Mxenge.
On 4 August 1997, the Truth and Reconciliation Committee granted Coetzee amnesty. Coetzee refused to ever speak about Vlakplaas from that day forward, and he took many secrets to his grave, including the burial site of Sizwe Khondile.
