I’m doing an out-of-interest survey at the moment, about what product you guys out there are wearing in your hair. Personally, I’m rocking the Redken ‘Maneuver’ – sold at Partners for a reassuringly expensive R302. What do YOU use – from where and how much?
So far I’ve received the following intelligence:
1) Nick Goldblatt is rocking a brand called ‘muk.’ Never heard of it, but I like the name. Nick says it’s coming in at a sufficiently premium R200. I like that. To be honest, I feel uncomfortable using anything under R150. I’d say R150 is my ‘floor price,’ when it comes to hair product. Nick says it has a rather strong hold, ‘perhaps even too strong.’ This surprises me as Nick’s hair is very whispy and hardly the type that would require such a strong hold.
2) Simon Hartley, AKA Silverstreak, the Chief Whip at 2oceansvibe opts for ‘Lock Stock and Barrel Pucka Grooming Créme’ from Barnett Fair, which comes in at R250 for 100 grams. With a name like that I would refuse on paying anything less, to be honest. I’d pay R50 for the kappie on the é alone. Streak says he digs it because “it lasts forever, keeps my mane moisturised, and isn’t heavy like gel.”
Interesting what he said there. I like that vibe of rolling with créme or cream’ opposed to actual gel. Very sophisticado.
3) Dean Delaney, also originally from Durban, is a V05 man, opting for their ‘texturising gum.’ It comes in at a very car-guard-change price of R42, which I must say makes me slightly uncomfortable. I’m just worried about the damage the product might be doing to my hair, at that price. Dean is indifferent, saying he likes the price and also the fact that it’s easy to find – in Pick n Pay and the like. He also included a video, showing his hair product in action. Watch that here.
4) I mentioned the Redken Maneuvre earlier. That’s what I use. It comes it at a reassuringly expensive R302 from Partners. I like it because it’s water-based and maintains a natural texture, whilst still maintaining control. I do need to use quite a bit when my hair gets longer, and that makes me feel uncomfortable – especially when I am buying more than one tub a month. I’d rather be spending that money on other things. Like oysters. And cheese.
I should also mention that I often put a couple drops of Moroccan oil in my hair after showering. I find it just reduces frizz and adds bounce. Then I sleep on that and start fresh in the morning.
But let’s chat further about this.
This is what we want to know from you:
1) What is your brand of hair product? What model/type?
2) How much is it?
3) Where do you buy it?
4) What do you like about it?
