North Korean women are being urged to choose one of the 18 approved hairstyles below, to do their bit for their country. The hairstyles have been approved by communist officials in an attempt to outlaw any western influences.
It will also be easy to distinguish between married and unmarried women based on their hairstyles under the new styling regime. Married women normally have a shorter cropped style, while unmarried women are free to go wild, with plaits, braids or even a coloured ribbon. Naughty!
Men on the other hand are not afforded such a buffet of hairstyles. They have a choice of ten, all short, styles. Their hair has to be five centimeters or shorter and must be trimmed every 15 days.
“Let us trim our hair in accordance with Socialist lifestyle”, was the name of a series aired by North Korean state TV aiming to lobby North Korean men to have a ”short back and side” trim. The series went as far as to suggest that any man not complying with the ”short back and side” trim be named and sent to a brutal prison camp shamed.
