When last week’s episode ended with Kagiso’s crew walking out on him in the midst of one of his little tirades, I was convinced this week’s episode would take us back to the look & feel of Episode 1. I was expecting silly physical humour. Boy was I wrong. The second last episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure really is just solo Kagiso doing his thing the best way he can, and it’s a nice mix of good gags and heart-warming nostalgia for good old South Africa.
Kagiso hits the streets of Kingston entirely on his own this week, deciding he can do the work of four people if he holds the camera, the microphone and that reflector thingie just right while he walks and talks. It makes for a great visual as he stumbles around and we get plenty of that Blair Witch Project stuff where he’s just cutting through his footage to different shots of his face.
Kagiso acts the crap out of this one, building on last week’s great performance, lumbering around and pretty much failing at his new role as a one-man film crew. When he gives up though we get some amazing shots of him pining for South Africa and whatever he can think of that makes this country such a great place to be.
And then it’s off to Nelson Mandela Park (they have one in Jamaica!) to try and track down the spirit of South Africa. He gets to interview the locals about Nelson Mandela himself and manages to work a joke or two in there while he learns a little personal lesson about being such an arrogant prick all the way through the show. It’s an elegant way to start closing things off for the final episode of the show next week and resolving all his diva behaviour.
After nine awesome episodes we’re on to the final one next week, with Kagiso on a mission to track down his crew and make amends.
We’ll bring you a new episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure every week for the next 10 weeks in the lead-up to the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on SABC 1. You can also check them out on Youtube over at Tropika’s channel.
