Anti apartheid activist, Mamphela Ramphele resigned as chairwoman of the Gold Fields Mining yesterday. This news only fuels the fire that Ramphele is starting her own political party to challenge the country’s ruling African National Congress. According to Gold Fields, Ramphele retired “to further her socio-economic and political work.”
Speculation went into overdrive when Ramphele visited the United States of America recently, where she said she “collected money for a political party” and said she was “entering politics to save her country.”
On the issue of whether Ramphele would be uniting forces with the DA, she said,
I am not a joiner but a change agent. I have always seen my role as a change agent supporting any appropriate trans formative process initiated by any South African.
It is reported that Ramphele is set to make a statement on Monday at Johannesburg’s Constitutional Hill regarding her political future.
