At the end of last month, we predicted that these two guys would probably die. Well, here’s our steaming humble pie.
Two British adventurers, Philip Young(64) and Paul Brace (45), left Cape Town on 1 February for a trans-continental drive. The two left the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town in their 875cc Fiat Panda, to drive the 16 000km to London.
The pair arrived at Marble Arch in central London on Monday evening, after a grueling 10 days, 13 hours and 28 minute driving time. Young said,
I just can’t believe how well the car drove – it’s been a long 10 days since we left the Mount Nelson, which now feels like a month. There were some tough times, but we don’t feel too bad because we did get some sleep in the car. Probably the most difficult bits were crossing the Egyptian-Sudanese border at a new crossing where there wasn’t any customs office
The lads covered 1 600km a day, crossing 13 countries at an average speed of 69 km/h. With their journey they raised R175 000 for the British charity, Farm Africa.
Brace and Young set a new record, compared to the previous one set by British Army officer Brigadier John Hemsley. Hemsley drove a 1983 Range Rover V8 and completed the journey in 14 days, 19 hours and 26 minutes.
This post was brought to you by the Mount Nelson Hotel. Where there are men in Khaki, but no threats of leopard mauling.
