Talk about a suprise attack. British troops are now using a sneaky, if not slightly laughable device. Just 10cm in length and weighing a mere 16g, this mini-me helicopter is equiped with a camera for top class surveillance. The Black Hornet nano drone is being used on the front line in Afghanistan to provide information on the ground.
These troops are the first to use these state-of-the-art tiny surveillance hellicopters. The high tech toys relay full motion videos and still images to the handler of the device on the battlefield. Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology, Philip Dunne said,
Black Hornet gives our troops the benefits of surveillance in the palm of their hands. It is extremely light and portable whilst out on patrol. We used it to look for insurgent firing points and check out exposed areas of the ground before crossing, which is a real asset. It is very easy to operate and offers amazing capability to the guys on the ground.
The nano helicopter was developed by Prox Dynamics AS of Norway, as part of a £20m contract for 160 units with Marlborough Communications Ltd (MCL), Surrey.
