Footage filmed by two unnamed South African policemen at Marikana on August 16 2012 show events as they unfolded from the police point of view. While disturbing footage of police opening fire on and slaying a group of charging protestors has been widely distributed, footage of the so-called Killing Koppi – where the majority of miners who perished that day died – has remained scarce. Until today.
Police have maintained that they acted in self-defense at all times, while the miners have insisted that many of their colleagues and friends were purposely cornered at the Killing Koppi, hunted as they hid, and executed by SAPS and SAPS tactical repsonse units.
Miners have also alleged that leaders of their collective have been actively targeted by police for torture, intimidation, and assassination.
As the Farlam Commission into the massacre continues, the latest footage is certain to strengthen the miners’ claims against the police.
