The latest Bond movie iteration is about to make it across the R35 million line at the South African box-office. Skyfall is now not only the biggest Bond movie ever (internationally-speaking), but also the biggest film of all time for the local distributers, SPRI (Sony Pictures Releasing International).
Skyfall kicked off with a record-breaking opening weekend at the end of November 2012. Analysts believe that a significant proportion of local fans returned to see the multiple times throughout the December holiday period, which would account for the number of zeros the film has collected in Rands. Of course, as long as a movie is selling, it plays. Skyfall is still screening across South Africa.
The continued commercial success is good news for brands like Heineken, who paid for a large proportion of the film’s production costs in order to guarantee in-film and spin-off exposure.
The film has five Oscar nominations, including Best Original Song by Adele, who will be performing the song live at the upcoming 85th Academy Awards ceremony.
Skyfall stars Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Dame Judie Dench, Albert Finney as well as Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe, and is directed by Sam Mendes who has already signed on to direct another three Bond films.
