Struggling TopTV, currently under business administration, wants to launch three TV channels called Playboy TV, Desire TV and Private Spice as soon as possible as a way to bring in the money.
TopTV wants to run the porn channels for 24 hours a day in South Africa, despite broadcasting regulations not currently permitting that. The three channels will “be blocked with a double layered PIN” and have a rating of R18.
The proposed bouquet of pornographic channels has apparently been welcomed by a “vast majority of South Africans”.
TopTV’s acting CEO Eddie Mbalo said:
We believe that South Africans are mature enough to take personal responsibility for their television viewing habits.
We believe people are capable of choosing for themselves what they would like to view in the privacy of their homes, and that the vast majority of South Africans either welcome the prospect of adult television, or acknowledge the right of others to watch adult TV, even if they themselves are not particularly interested in this content.
