In this week’s episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure, the comedian hits up popular Kingston restaurant Grill 71 to try out some Jamaican cuisine. He’s made mention of their “jerk chicken” before and now we finally see Kagiso get to try the famous dish, and share a South African classic with a top chef.
This week resurrects Kagiso’s diva personality from the earlier episodes of Tropika’s web series, as he decides he can one up a Jamaican chef at making one of the country’s most famous dishes. And he does it by cooking up a little pap & vleis (I don’t even wanna know where he gets the ingredients). He also takes a few minutes to completely harass the clueless chef, who doesn’t seem like she’s doing too good a job of following what he’s saying anyway.
This jerk chicken stuff she’s making, however, looks like the real deal. Kagiso definitely seems to be enjoying it enough to finish off the plate, even if he won’t give her or Rosina the satisfaction of letting Jamaica take this one. Once again the show deviates into its more cartoony gags from the earliest episodes, but Kagiso balances it out with some impeccable comedic timing and sharp wit, even if he is just going up against a poor old chef.
I’m just hoping this means this diva personality survives into next week’s interview with Yohan Blake. It’s the episode I’ve been looking forward to the most ever since I caught a glimpse of it in the images from the upcoming episodes. I’m rubbing my hands together for the arrogant Kagiso going up against one of the world’s greatest athletes.
I can’t wait.
We’ll bring you a new episode of Kagiso’s Island of Treasure every week for the next 10 weeks in the lead-up to the launch of the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 on SABC 1. You can also check them out on Youtube over at Tropika’s channel.
