With the latest matric results just announced, and the arguable standard that they represent, comes a list of 10 things that are worth knowing about these results.

The announcement of the latest round of matric results has sparked furious debate on national television, radio and of course, social networking sites like Twitter.

The City Press has chosen 10 things that they feel are worth knowing about with respect to the latest results:

1. Out of the 511 152 who wrote the exams, 377 829 matrics (73,9%) passed.

2. At 73,9%, the 2012 pass rate is 3,7 percentage points higher than the previous year’s pass rate.

3. Gauteng is the best-performing province at 83,9%, followed by the Western Cape at 82,8%.

4. Out of the 27 best-performing learners, 15 are from Limpopo.

5. Only 1,8% of matriculants who passed got between 30 and 39%.

6. The 2012 matrics are known as “born-frees” because most of them were born in 1994, the year of South Africa’s first democratic elections.

7. Most of these matriculants enrolled for Grade 1 in 2001, which means they had 12 years of schooling under the new curriculum.

8. Question papers for certain subjects were evaluated by international assessment bodies such as Cambridge International Examinations, the Scottish Qualification Authority and the Board of Studies New South Wales.

9. For 2012, 7,4 million matric scripts were marked by 39 039 markers at 118 centres.

10. There are 55 650 distinctions in the main subjects, and 136 047 learners got university exemption.
