Christopher Chaney – the guy who hacked Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, and Christina Aguilera’s e-mail accounts before leaking nude photos of them onto the internet – has just been sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay R650 000 in restitution to Johansson, Aguilera, and actress Renee Olstead.
The 36-year-old hacker pled guilty to nine felony counts back in March – including identity theft, wiretapping, and unauthorised access and damage to a protected computer. He was first arrested in October 2011.
How did he do it? In an earlier interview with GQ magazine, Chaney explained that getting into these emails had been relatively easy by using Google and the ‘I forgot my password’ button. After trying out combinations of A-listers’ names to find working email addresses, he reset account passwords by researching pet names, where they were born and went to school.
You feel like you’ve seen something that the rest of the world wanted to see. But you’re the only one that’s seen it. I don’t want to compare it to throwing a touchdown pass… but it was a rush.
While 10 years in jail might sound like a fitting punishment at first, consider this: Chaney was originally accused of hacking into the email accounts of FIFTY victims, including dozens of other A-List celebrities, and initially faced 121 years if convicted on all counts.
