Pope Benedict XVI tweeted for the first time yesterday from a personal Twitter account. This follows last week’s announcement by the Vatican that Benedict would begin posting messages on Twitter in eight languages under the handle @pontifex – a Latin term for pope that means “bridge builder.”
After first struggling with the touch screen of an iPad, Pope Benedict XVI dispatched his first Twitter message. It read:
Dear friends. I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart.
Not stopping there, he also fired off six more Tweets during the morning. Have a look below:
Benedict will be posting messages in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. Vatican officials have however acknowledged that he won’t physically be typing all the messages in the future. Instead someone in the Vatican’s secretariat of state will write them on his behalf. But they have insisted that the words will be his alone – culled from his speeches, homilies or catechism lessons.
