THE USUAL captured the hearts and minds of South African audiences with national number 1 hits like ‘The Shape that I’m in’ (download it for free here) and multi-SAMA award winning ‘Like a Vision’ and other chart-topping singles in the early naughties.

The line up of James Stewart, Tom Fox, Yoyo Buys & Paul Tizzard came together to form the mainstay of Cape Town’s pioneering Street Level Record’s stable. Fox’s mbaqanga guitar licks and James Stewart’s vocals have always formed the core of The Usual’s sound, with Tizzard and Buys’s rhythm section consistently providing the dynamic underbed to these songs. It’s a simple formula, but one that has consistently produced some of the best SA pop of the 90’s and 2000’s.

With Tom Fox and Yoyo Buys exploring international opportunities and James a successful solo singer/ songwriter career, The Usual was put on ice – never formally disbanding, with the most recent reunion in December of 2003.
