With less than a week until the main event, teams from around the country are scrambling to put the final touches on their flying machines in preparation for Red Bull Flugtag at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on the 9th of December 2012
Keeping the crowd and teams on their toes, your hosts on Sunday are ginger sport guru Sias du Plessis, the bubbly Elana Afrika and the ever so smooth DJ Switch.
The judging panel responsible for giving the crews and their pre-flight antics the thumbs-up or thumbs-down is an eclectic mix featuring self-made ‘media mogul’ Seth Rotherham as head judge, funny man Siv Ngesi, radio personality Ryan O’ Connor and Olympians Khotso Mokoena and Bridget Hartley.
A spectacle of some weird and wonderful flying machines attempting flight is not all spectators will be treated to on the day. The crowd can expect to be blown away by never-before seen international performers as well as local house sensation, Goldfish.
On Sunday the 9th of December you can be sure that the V & A Waterfront’s Jetty 1 will be alive with many oohs, aaah and subsequent splashes from the plummeting attempts of the budding Amelia Earharts and Wright Brothers.
More about Red Bull Flugtag (CLICK HERE):
Last staged in South Africa in 2002, Red Bull Flugtag Cape Town 2012 will be the 123rd version of the event worldwide since the first in Vienna, Austria in 1992. The world record for longest flight distance currently sits at 69.79m.
Teams are challenged to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 6m high ramp in the hopes of achieving flight. Flugtag may mean “flying day” in German, but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below. They are judged not only on their flight’s distance, but creativity and showmanship as well.
Spectators are treated to the pilots and crews hilarious pre-flight antics, elaborate flying machines, cringe-worthy attempts at the longest flight record and subsequent plummets into the wavy waters below.
