This is the perfect example of how to quit your job in a classy way, while giving management the middle finger at the same time. Two news anchors from Maine in the US, Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio, signed off their broadcast on Tuesday night with their resignations.
After thanking viewers for their loyalty, Consiglio said that “some recent developments have come to their attention” and departing together is the best alternative they can take. The announcement surprised even the staff, many of whom had shocked looks on their faces off-screen.
In an interview shortly afterwards, Consiglio said that they had become fed up with the station’s management over the past four years. Michaels cited “constant disrespecting and belittling of staff”, as well as editorial intervention by higher-ups, as deciding factors.
There was a constant disrespecting and belittling of staff and we both felt there was a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management in running a newsroom to the extent that I was not allowed to structure and direct them professionally.
But not everyone was shocked by the on-air resignations. Mike Palmer, vice president and general manager:
No, that was unfortunate, but not unexpected. We’ll hire experienced people to fill these positions sooner rather than later.
