We can think of only one thing worse than getting caught by the police with 220 smuggled diamonds in your stomach. And that is having to sit through the process of removing them from your digestive system with the help of purgatives.
After arresting a 25-year-old Lebanese national bound for Dubai at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday, it was found that he was carrying nearly R20 million worth of diamonds in his belly. Police spokesman Paul Ramaloko:
The suspect had swallowed the polished diamonds before he was stopped at a security checkpoint. He was then relieved of his concealed cargo. We used laxatives to remove the diamonds. We managed to recover 220 pieces in the process.
In March, police arrested another Lebanese national who was attempting to smuggle R15 million worth of diamonds out of South Africa.
