After accusing Public Service Minister Lindiwe Sisulu of wasting public resources by travelling in a luxury Gulfstream jet more than 200 times between Pretoria and Cape Town on Tuesday, DA MP David Maynier was instructed to “keep his flea-infested body” and sit down by the minister.
The trips, said to cost at least R200 000 each, are no laughing matter gang. A small calculation of the overall cost will bring you to the grand total of about R40 million, give or take a few rands.
The Current Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has already acknowledged that Sisulu did indeed enjoy the trips in a reply to a parliamentary question about the matter.
But of course, Sisulu disputes this, and claims she only lived the holiday on 35 occasions.
Maynier was quoted as saying:
I can only imagine that the former minister of defence and military veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu, is desperately missing the ultra-luxury [of the] privately owned Gulfstream executive jets operated by the South African Air Force. The [current] minister of defence claims there were 203 flights. But the former minister of defence claims there were 35 flights.
National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu has responded to complaints about the remarks by saying he would study the printed transcripts of the parliamentary debates, and make a ruling later.
Parliament is a fun place.
Work is a sideline, live the holiday.
