A new entry has just made its way onto the three most watched YouTube videos of all time list. And what else could it be other than Psy’s Gangnam Style? Since being uploaded on 15 July this year, the music video has been watched more than 532 million times! Watch it here.
The only other two that has so far racked up more views is Justin Bieber’s Baby, and On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez. But with the Guinness World Record for the most “liked” video in YouTube history, we’d say it’s safe to assume that Psy is Youtube’s biggest star.
And by all accounts, the ride seems far from over!
In a recent Daily Best interview with the South Korean singer, Psy (birth name Park Jae-sang) mentions that in the past week alone, he’s had to travel to Australia, California, and New York. At every event or interview he attends, he is also expected to do his signature dance.
Apart from talking about how tired he is, the interview also features some insight into the filming process:
Gangnam Style was shot in 48 hours across 28 locations in the Gangnam District of Seoul, as well as greater Seoul. Though it appears to mock the nouveau riche tackiness of the area, which is often referred to as the Beverly Hills of South Korea, that was not our intention. The video isn’t a criticism of Gangnam, and was merely intended to lift people’s spirits.
Psy also made an interesting revelation regarding the inspiration behind his horse-like dance moves.
Me and my choreographers in Korea spent 30 nights doing every animal. We did this slithering on the floor that we called the snake dance. Then someone turned on the TV, and there was a horse galloping across a yard!
The interview ends with Psy mentioning that he has just finished recording his new track last week. They are now working on conceptualising a music video as well as a brand new dance that he hopes can outdo Gangnam Style.
I’m just known as a YouTube sensation with a funny song, for now. I need to show the world that my final goal is to perform huge concerts like Madonna.
