Throughout his life, Steve Jobs was renowned for his perfectionist tendencies, so it’s no surprise that his yacht, Venus, was built to the same specifications. The unique, self-designed yacht recently made its first public appearance in the Dutch city of Aalsmeer.
According to employees who worked on the yacht, it is between 70 and 80 metres long, and the hull in constructed entirely of aluminium, giving it a significant weight advantage over similarly sized crafts. The design is sleek and minimal, which is to be expected from the mind of the man who created the MacBook. An excerpt from Jobs’ biography revealed further details:
As expected, the planned yacht was sleek and minimalist. The teak decks were perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. As at an Apple store, the cabin windows were large panes, almost floor to ceiling, and the main living area was designed to have walls of glass that were forty feet long and ten feet high. He had gotten the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that was able to provide structural support. By then the boat was under construction by the Dutch custom yacht builders Feadship, but Jobs was still fiddling with the design. “I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene with a half-built boat,” he said. “But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.”
It is also believed that the interior was designed by renowned French designeer, Philippe Starck – this after Starck’s press team confirmed the he was working on a “private project” for the Jobs family.
The ships builders each received an iPod shuffle, which had the ship’s name inscribed on its back, for their efforts.
It was reported that the Jobs family was on site for the yacht’s unveiling but it is unclear when, and if, they will use the craft.
It would just be a shame to let something so beautiful go to waste and our guess is that Laurene (Jobs’ wife) and the children will definitely make good use of Venus.
