Complaining that sex education guidelines are woefully out of date, the UK teachers union, the National Association of Head Teachers, has called for a novel new approach to helping kids learns about all those funny changes and why girls and boys get together. This shouldn’t cause any trouble with parents, I’m sure.
Basing their argument on new research that suggests that children as young as 11-years-old are becoming addicted to pornography, the union feels that it should become a part of the sexual education curriculum, to be taught to kids as young as 10-years-old. Speaking for the union, Sion Humphreys said the following:
Children are growing up in an overtly sexualised world. That includes easy access to porn and they need the skills to deal with it.
We would support children being taught in an age-appropriate way about the impact of pornography as part of a statutory Personal Social Health Education programme.
The call for the change in the curriculum has been met with mixed support, but most of it rather positive, with a lot of family organisations coming forward in support of the suggestion. Many acknowledge that the situation is inescapable – 90% of kids today own a smartphone, for instance.
Sex Ed in the UK is currently not compulsory, apart from the anatomy lessons taught in biology. Parents are still able to withdraw their children from any sexual education classes.
