In the first move of its kind, Twitter has officially banned the account of a German neo-Nazi group. The action came after a request from German police, who claimed the account holders were a “criminal organisation”.
The account which was suspended belongs to Besseres Hannover (@hannoverticker). The ban is only effective in Germany, and the group’s tweets can still be viewed outside of the country. A quick review of their account reveals that the majority of their tweets seem mostly harmless.
This is the first time Twitter has enforced their ability to censor accounts, which they announced in January. In that announcement, they also stated that they would always make such censorships public knowledge, and disclose any relevant information – which they have done. In this case, Alex Macgillivray, Twitter’s general consul, tweeted the news.
