There are few things, let alone animals, that can stop a herd of thousands of wildebeest mid-migration, but it appears one angry two-ton hippo might just be enough.
On 5 October, Manoj Shah was in the Serengeti, filming the animals during their annual migration when he spotted something strange – a lone hippo obstructing the wildebeest in their path. It appeared that the migrating herd had unknowingly stumbled onto his territory and, despite being comically outnumbered, he was determined to stand his ground. It wasn’t long however before the angry beast realised the futility of his actions and moved along, allowing the migration to continue unhindered.
Shah recounted the events:
Suddenly a big dominant male hippo stood up in the middle of the river on his four short legs and began chasing all the wildebeest and zebras away.
He even climbed onto the bank and tried chasing them off the shore before getting back in the river in the middle and just standing there.
It was like watching a massive bulldozer causing a traffic jam on a motorway, none of the migrating animals wanted to get in the river with him.
No one crossed while he was there until he calmed down and went further upstream to sit on his belly again in the water. After he’d gone the crossing started again in full force.
