Yesterday, about 400 miners at the Nkaneng informal settlement in Photsaneng, near Rustenburg, gathered in protest. They then marched to Num’s offices in Rustenburg to de-register their membership with the union.
However, before they got there, they burned one man and shot another to death. It is believed these were colleagues who did not want to take part in the strike. Several security guards and members of the public were also assaulted by strikers. Video footage can be seen below.
Captain Dennis Adriao from the SAPS said two minibus taxis were also set on fire. They were transporting people to work and other places when they were burnt.
Not all the people in the taxis were going to the mines. Some were children going to school and others were women going to clinics and other places. We cannot confirm whether they were going to the mine.
Workers at Amplats went on an illegal strike last month, demanding a monthly salary of R16 000, and allowances. The company responded by firing 12 000 workers because they failed to appear in disciplinary hearings.
