Selena Gomez gets her kink on
I’d be lying if I said we didn’t see this coming. I thought it might end up being a kinky skin flick (if it isn’t already), but as it turns out, Hollywood has embraced the latest in mom-erotica. The sexy (and bondage-filled) adventures of billionaire Christian Grey and literature student Anastasia Steel are heading to the silver screen.
The now infamous romance novel (rated one star by over 4 000 Amazon.com users) is about to be adapted, by none other than the co-creator of the acclaimed but short-lived series Terra Nova. Kelly Marcel was announced as the screenwriter by Fifty Shades author EL James herself yesterday, who will also be producing the film along with Michael de Luca (producer of American History X) and Dana Brunetti (producer of The Social Network).
Issuing a joint statement, the two stated their excitement about their choice of screenwriter:
Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks.
We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley’s engagement with the characters and world EL James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family.
If you’re still not sure what all the hype is about, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first in a trilogy of books, mostly aimed at bored housewives looking for a thrill. It deals with the sadomasochistic relationship between Christian Grey, a dominating male figure, and his relationship with the much younger Anastasia Steele, a literature student. The books have sold over 58 million copies to date, most of them on e-book (which it is argued is because that way people can’t see what you’re reading on the train). Think of it as Twilight for moms. The movie adaptation will most likely end up making a metric ton of money.
The big question now of course is, who’s going to be cast as Grey and Steele?
