2oceansvibe’s sports columnist, Sean Wilson, debates the controversial perils of what happens when you name an unchanged Springbok team. It’s something a Bok coach hasn’t done since 2009.
Well Heyneke, you’ve really done it this time. You’ve already done many things that have made us mad in your short tenure as Springbok coach, but this could be the worst. How the hell can you name an unchanged Springbok starting team? What are we all supposed to talk about at work?
It’s just blatantly irresponsible of you. A flagrant dereliction of duty. As Springbok coach, you’re the custodian of the biggest conversational topic in the country. Don’t you know that we’ve already wasted all the working hours we can discussing this team? Now with an unchanged starting lineup (after a win nogal), you’ve given us nothing but a conversational cul-de-sac.
Maybe you should pay attention to how your predecessors went about the job. Remember the days of Rudolf Straueli? Oh, the working hours we spent talking about those selections. Remember the outrage around Jorrie Muller’s inclusion, Brent Russell’s positional switches, Gus Theron’s call up! He struck me as a man of few words, did Rudolf, but he gave me many.
This week started off well. Those two late additions to the squad gave us plenty to work with. We were able to avoid plenty of work discussing the pros, but mainly the cons, of Lionel Mapoe and the other guy, especially the other guy. It was especially great for those that don’t watch the Bulls play. After all, one shouldn’t watch a Bull play before forming an opinion. It biases one so.
Then there was all that talk about the injury niggles in the squad, but that ended up being nothing but a tease. Imagine if Willem Alberts hadn’t been passed fit? Or better yet, Zane Kirchner? Why, that might’ve meant bringing in Juan de Jongh in a reshuffle with political overtones. As topics go, transformation is an oldie, but a goodie.
