While Apple lovers are not committing the crimes themselves, popularity of the company’s devices in New York is being blamed for the increase of crime in the city. The NYPD commissioner has said that crime in New York City has significantly risen due to the theft of Apple products.
It turns out that gangsters and hipsters alike want a new iPad, iPhone 5 or iPod. And while the hipsters are happy to stand in a queue for days, the thieves are not. Last year the number of Apple products stolen in New York was 13 233 compared with just 86 ten years ago, Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a speech.
This is not a typical measure for assessing the success of a company, but it sure is an interesting one. The yearly total of Apple products stolen is set to rise again this year with 11 447 Apple products stolen so far – a 40 per cent increase on the same period last year.
Commissioner Kelly believes that this year’s 4% increase in crime in New York is down purely to the theft of Apple products. “In the absence of the Apple thefts, we would be experiencing a decline,” he told the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
While there is no word on when Law and Order: Special Apple Unit will go into production, the NYPD are having to take pre-emptive measure to try and limit the crimes. Mr Kelly explained that on the day the iPhone 5 was launched, the NYPD sent officers to 21 stores across New York to register the serial numbers of the phones and the contact details of the owners in case the phones were later stolen.
