New SAA chair hits jackpot – Controversy continues to dog financially embattled SAA with the contentious appointment of its new board chairman, Vuyisile Kona. Kona, the former head of SAA’s subsidiaries, was axed in 2005 by then SAA CEO Khaya Ngqula. He sued the airline for, he alleged, failing to pay him his “termination contract” in full. SAA – which is asking for a R6-billion taxpayer bailout – and Kona said they reached an “amicable” agreement. [timeslive]
BREAKING: Samsung files lawsuit against Apple over latest iPhone – Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday that it filed a new lawsuit against Apple Inc in a U.S. court, contending the iPhone 5 infringed on Samsung’s patents. SA mine bosses talk tough with strikers – Top global platinum producer Anglo Platinum (Amplats) said on Monday it would fire all strikers who did not attend disciplinary hearings the following day as an illegal strike continued at 4 of its South African mines. With no end in sight to a spate of wildcat strikes in South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti warned that an illegal stoppage could lead to cuts in its operations there and said it might also have to fire workers. Truck drivers’ strike to intensify, say union leaders – Striking truck workers marched in Johannesburg on Monday as a costly strike entered its second week. With no settlement in sight, union leaders are adamant the industrial action will intensify. “We must keep up the fight for economic freedom. We must not let the fight die. People must be with us. Farlam inquiry concludes Marikana hills inspection – A judicial inquiry into the shooting of striking Lonmin workers at Marikana concluded an inspection of the hills where the workers were killed. On Monday, two North West crime scene experts led retired judge Ian Farlam and his team around the area where 34 miners were shot dead by police. Warrant Officer Patrick Thamae pointed out where bodies were found near the main hill, where the mineworkers assembled in the days leading up to the shooting on August 16. [mg]
NPA ‘overjoyed’ with Cwele’s new sentence – The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Monday said it was elated by the decision handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to increase Sheryl Cwele’s jail sentence from 12 to 20 years. The Bloemfontein Court found that the sentence imposed on State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele’s ex-wife was “disturbingly inappropriate”. [ewn]
Spain Said to Be Ready to Seek Euro-Zone Bailout – Spain is ready to seek a bailout for its public finances, Reuters reported, citing four unidentified European officials. Germany has indicated that Spain should hold off, Reuters said. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in September that Spain was on the right track and may need less support than previously thought. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who spent six months campaigning for European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to buy bonds, has been considering the benefits of seeking aid since Aug. 2. U.S. Judge Lifts Ban on Samsung Tablet – The judge overseeing the patent dispute between Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. in a California federal court lifted a sales ban on a Samsung tablet computer after a jury in August found that the product didn’t infringe an Apple patent. Judge Lucy Koh issued the preliminary injunction June 26 after finding that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 likely violated an Apple patent on the design of a tablet computer. [wsj]

Romney attacks Obama foreign policy ahead of debate – Mitt Romney and Republican allies launched a coordinated assault on President Barack Obama’s foreign policy Monday, seeking to exploit a fissure ahead of the debut debate between the White House rivals tomorrow. Microsoft introduces new MSN for Windows 8, to launch its own news operation – Microsoft is launching its own news operation as part of its new-look MSN website when Windows 8 launches later this month. The world’s largest software company is making a “big, multi-million dollar investment” to create a “decent-sized media operation,” said Bob Visse, general manager, MSN Product Management Group. It was none other than the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton. Over the weekend a Danish magazine published more explicit photos from the same set, featuring the Duchess frontally naked. Newspaper pictures editors say there are as many as 270 pictures being hawked around, which feature both the Duchess and Prince William naked – only 24 have appeared thus far. California Bans Gay Conversion Therapy for Minors – Therapy aimed at changing the sexual orientation of minors who say they are gay has been outlawed in California, the first state to adopt such legislation. California Gov. Jerry Brown announced he had signed the bill on Sunday. The bill’s sponsor, Calif. State Sen. Ted Lieu, said the so-called “conversion therapy,” “sexual orientation therapy,” “reparative therapy,” or “sexual orientation change efforts” — amounts to ”psychological child abuse.” [abc]

Chinese restaurant shut down after officials find dead deer in kitchen – Red Flower Chinese Restaurant is closed – at least temporarily – after the owner says his son found the dead animal on I-75 and they were butchering it before taking it home to eat themselves. Environmental health inspector Paul Lawson said that the restaurant may not be closed for good. It can reopen if it passes a health inspection proving that it completely cleaned and sanitized the property. [nydaily]
