Sweet Potato is a young Cape Town startup company that is making planet friendly, durable and protective laptop and tablet sleeves from recycled hessian Global Coffee bags.
Seven budding entrepreneur students studying the Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Management at UCT had to come up with an idea for a business with startup cash of just R50.
They had a theme: produce a product that is ‘green’ and acts as ‘storage’. They decided: keep it local, and went with the concept of ‘Cape Town’ and planet friendly. Their idea: recycling hessian Global Coffee bags from around the world as well as up-cycling material books to create their funky, durable and protective laptop and tablet sleeves. Through the production of the products, seven previously disadvantaged single mothers have now found employment as a result.
They were lucky to get some help along the way from a few corporate enterprises, but the R15 000 they made off boerewors roll sales apparently helped a lot too.
Using the recycled hessian as the base, and the up-cycled material for the funky flaps, each sleeve is unique and a one of a kind piece. These are quirky, high quality and affordable laptop and tablet sleeves gang. Very cool.
