It’s back! After its initial launch almost a decade ago, the grandaddy of social networks, MySpace, is set to make a comeback with a completely redesigned site and new interface which they’ve previewed in a brand new teaser video. The new site looks great and, as one would expect, is promising to be the next big thing, yet I foresee one slight problem: does anyone care?
Ever since the onset of Facebook, and maybe since even before that, MySpace has been on a slippery slope, steadily sliding towards its seemingly inevitable doom. Yet, from the brink, comes a glimmer of hope – a redesigned site that may hold just enough allure to give Facebook a run for its money. Probably not though.
The recently released preview video shows MySpace’s new look is undeniably good, it’s liberally taken design cues from some the best sites out there and created its own little space. Most notably, it seems to have been heavily influenced by Pinterest and Google+, the only real difference being that MySpace will primarily scroll horizontally instead of vertically. As was the case with older iterations, music will be a central part of the new site and controls have been integrated directly into the interface. It also looks like users will be able to attach photos to playlists, forcing people to listen to a specific soundtrack while browsing a photo album/gallery. Check the video below for more.
There appears to be heavy integration with other social networks, so that you can easily add friends from Facebook and Twitter, as no doubt everyone will be clambering for a spot on the newest network.
MySpace have put up a valiant effort over the last couple of years, but it’s highly unlikely that a new site, with a few novel applications is going to win over the hearts of any of the multitude of Facebook users. It looks like a great platform and boasts a few unique features, but it’s simply not different or alluring enough to tempt casual users away from the comfort of what they know. Then again, with the constant bombardment of ads, games and apps on Facebook, it’s possible that users might just be fed-up enough to give something new a go. Just look at Google+, it launched just over a ago and already has almost half as many users as Facebook at 400 million.
