It’s time to start getting a little worried, gang. Soon that Saturday morning English breakfast is going to be missing its most vital ingredient, and your bacon and egg roll will become nothing more than just an egg roll. It’s coming – the porkpocalypse.
The UK’s National Pig Association has released a press statement to warn us of the imminent loss of our crispy piggy goodness.
New data shows the European Union pig herd is declining at a significant rate, and this is a trend that is being mirrored around the world. Pig farmers have been plunged into loss by high pig-feed costs, caused by the global failure of maize and soya harvests. All main European pig-producing countries report shrinking sow herds.
The blame is being placed on droughts in North America and Russia, affecting the supply of grain crops that are used to feed the animals. This has led to the decrease in herd size – and less bacon for the rest of us. They have further warned that a global shortage in 2013 will be unavoidable.
I can already see how this is going to go – first the price will rise, then you’ll only be able to find the weird packs of bacon (like the diced one), and then there’ll be a gap on the shelf – bacon having become a luxury only the mega rich can afford.
Okay, maybe not that extreme, but I don’t think clearing some space in the freezer is a bad idea.
