Yesterday, the SAPS released the latest Crime Statistics Overview and, although it might not always seem like it, crime is on a steady downward trend.
The survey found that contact crimes, which comprise murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault GBH (grievous bodily harm), common assault, robbery aggravating and common robbery and trio crime (carjacking, residential and business robbery) still make up the majority of the country’s criminal activity, as is depicted in the chart below.
It also showed that the murder rate had decreased by 27,6% over the last eight years, and 3,1% over the last year. Despite this, there were still 15 609 people killed from 1 April last year to 31 March this year. Adult men accounted for over 80% of the victims, women made up 14,6%, and nearly 800 children were killed – more than two a day. Over 70 cases of sexual assault against children were recorded daily and 758 minors were victims of attempted murder. Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa spoke in parliament at the announcement of the statistics.
A greater and growing awareness among parents/guardians that children should be looked after and protected, must be considered.
