That’s not a misprint folks, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams recently ran, swam and cycled in space the same distance as her earthbound counterparts would have done in the Nautica Malibu Triahtlon, which was held in Southern California.
Sunita completed the impressive feat aboard the International Space Station (ISS) this past Sunday.
I’m happy to be done. It wasn’t easy, and I’m sure everybody in California’s very happy to be done too.
The race consisted of an 800m swim, a 29km cycle and a 6,4km run. Although cycling and running could be done while strapped onto a stationary bike and a treadmill respectively, swimming was slightly more complicated. To simulate swimming, Williams did weightlifting and resistance exercises in the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) that approximated to swimming in microgravity.
“Swimming” half a mile (0,8 km), biking 18 miles (29 km), and running 4 miles (6,4 km) were all finished in one hour, 48 minutes and 33 seconds.
Williams is an avid athlete and this was not her first, competitive space-based event. In 2007 she “ran” the Boston marathon and last month she “ran” the seven mile Falmouth Road Race as part of her preparation for the triathlon.
