Maybe you’ve heard of the concept of six degrees of separation, which states that any two people can be connected to each other by six other people. This is where the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon comes from, as well as Google’s latest built-in feature: The Bacon Calculator.
The premise of the game is quite simple: name any actor, and you’ll be able to connect him or her to Kevin Bacon in less than six movies. So, for example, let’s take South African District 9 star, Sharlto Copley. He starred in the A Team with Liam Neeson. Liam Neeson was in Kinsey with John Lithgow. John Lithgow starred in Footloose with Kevin Bacon.
Bam! Sharlto Copley has a Bacon Number of three.
To use the new feature, simply type in:
bacon number [actor/actress name]
Viola! Google will do the rest, giving you the result in seconds. I wish you the best of luck in trying to stay productive today.
Try as I might, I haven’t been able to get a score of higher than three for any actor. Please let me know if you can find the actor that holds the elusive six degrees. I simply have to know.
Google bases its calculations on what it calls its Knowledge Graph, a computational knowledge project. This is independent from other Bacon calculators, such as The Oracle of Bacon, which mostly use Imdb. Kevin Bacon has most likely been chosen as the lead in this game due to his long acting career, covering a whole multitude of genres.
Also, Bacon. Yum.
