Three Cape Town brothels, in Milnerton, Claremont and Diep River respectively, were shut down and their operators arrested during a joint operation between the Hawks and the City of Cape Town’s Vice Squad. Two women who ran these brothels were arrested and charged with operating illegal establishments. They will appear in the Wynberg Magistrates Court today.
But it is not only the madams who have taken a knock. Working girls in Athlone, Parow, Bellville, Brooklyn and Lansdowne got into trouble with the law as well. Between them, all the prostitutes managed to rack up 12 fines to the value of R14 800. The fines were for “plying their trade in these areas”.
The Vice Squad also issued this public statement:
We will continue to act against brothels situated throughout Cape Town – especially where there have been complaints from members of the public. The Unit is always eager to assist those prostitutes on the street who wish to leave the sex trade.
