Every day, the internet is flooded with ridiculous claims and preposterous stories, each begging for attention and the majority lacking even a shred of truth, and it’s our duty, as your humble news-givers, to shift through them all and bring you the rare, uncommon gems. Today, I believe I have found just such a gem – there’s a legitimate chance that Usain Bolt may play for Manchester United.
Bolt, the multiple Olympic Champion, is a massive United supporter and has said before that he’d fancy himself if a spot opened up on the squad.
People think I am joking, but if Sir Alex Ferguson called me up and said ‘Okay, let’s do this. Come and have a trial’, it would be impossible for me to say no.
I would not take up the challenge if I didn’t think I was good enough. I am a very accomplished player and I know I could make a difference.
I would be the fastest player in the team – but I can play as well.
As it turns out, that may actually be case when Manchester United face Real Madrid in a friendly next season. Sir Alex Furgeson spoke to Inside United magazine:
Usain’s a character and a big United fan.
But it’s interesting he says he’d like to play in a charity game. It could be brilliant, and next year when we play Real Madrid’s Legends again, there could be opportunities to bring him up and see how he does.
Other than making a personal dream come true for the fastest man alive, the club also stands to gain from the collaboration. According to his sponsor, Puma, Bolt’s “media value” sits around €80 million and his worldwide fame is undeniable, slap on a jersey from the most supported football team in the world and it’s enough to get even the most composed marketers and advertisers frothing!
Although nothing has been confirmed yet, this, a star-spangled friendly, is a far more plausible option than actually seeing Bolt trotting out to compete in the Premier League.
Here’s a little taste of the star’s prowess on the football pitch.
