A little while ago, The University of Cape Town (UCT)’s Science department announced groundbreaking news: it has found a single dose cure for Malaria.
Science and Technology Minister, Naledi Pandor, was present for the announcement made today, and this indicates the level of achievement this breakthrough might represent.
EWN reported that researchers have been hard at work for several years, and that they now believe that they have discovered a drug that may “annihilate” a mosquito’s parasitic life cycle.
The potent drug has thus far been tested on animals, and has shown that a single oral dose has completely cured those infected with Malaria parasites.
This is a hugely significant breakthrough and may mean that millions of people around the world can potentially get cured as a result.
Currently, Malaria is one of Africa’s biggest killers, and the disease causes 24 per cent of child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. Globally, approximately one million people die each year from the disease.
Clinical trials are set to take place at the end of 2013.
