Here’s the best news a lot of men may read this week: Scientists and dermatologists are confident that a new lotion could be on the shelves in two years which will prevent you from having to do that awkward comb-over every morning.
The lotion works by blocking a particular enzyme in the human body that has been shown to prevent your hair follicles from growing. The culprit, prostaglandin D2 (also known as PGD2), is found in higher levels in your bald spots, causing your follicles to be less efficient at producing hair. The hair in these patches becomes shorter and shorter, causing thinning, until eventually your hair can no longer break through the skin. Statistics show that four out of five men will experience some level of baldness by the age of 70.
Blocking this enzyme would allow your hair follicles to resume their normals levels of hair production, leading to longer and thicker hair. Products already exist that block PGD2, which is also a component of asthma. This pre-approval of PGD2-blockers is hoped to speed up the approval of a treatment specifically aimed at baldness.
Talks are in place with several pharmaceutical companies to produce the anti-baldness product, which scientists believe will not only prevent baldness but also allow bald men to regrow their hair.
